Background of the Study
Cultural festivals in Nigeria are vibrant expressions of tradition and community identity, often accompanied by performance scripts that guide theatrical presentations. Syntactic variation in these scripts reflects the dynamic interplay between formal written language and the spontaneous, oral traditions that underpin cultural performances (Emeka, 2023). Festival performance scripts often incorporate non-standard syntactic constructions, including elliptical sentences, parallel structures, and code-switching between indigenous languages and Nigerian English. These syntactic features serve to enhance dramatic effect, foster audience engagement, and preserve cultural narratives. This study examines the syntactic patterns found in performance scripts used during Nigerian cultural festivals, with a focus on how these variations contribute to the overall aesthetic and communicative goals of the performances (Chinwe, 2024). Through discourse analysis and field observations of festival performances, the research aims to document the syntactic diversity inherent in these cultural artifacts and assess its impact on the clarity and expressiveness of the performances (Adebayo, 2025).
Statement of the Problem
Despite the cultural significance of performance scripts in Nigerian festivals, research on syntactic variation within these texts is limited. Existing studies have largely focused on the content and thematic elements of cultural performances, neglecting the detailed syntactic structures that contribute to their effectiveness (Emeka, 2023). This gap hinders our understanding of how non-standard syntactic patterns influence audience reception and the transmission of cultural values. Without a systematic examination, it remains unclear whether syntactic variation enhances the expressive quality of performance scripts or introduces ambiguity. This study aims to fill this gap by analyzing syntactic variation in festival scripts, thereby contributing to improved strategies for cultural preservation and performance clarity (Chinwe, 2024).
Objectives of the Study
Research Questions
Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it investigates syntactic variation in Nigerian cultural festival scripts, providing insights into how language structures shape cultural performance. The findings will assist cultural practitioners, linguists, and educators in preserving and enhancing the expressiveness of traditional performances (Emeka, 2023; Adebayo, 2025).
Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study is limited to analyzing syntactic variation in performance scripts used in Nigerian cultural festivals.
